Caseydoodle Irish Terrier
The Irish Terrier is an ancient breed, having been developed from the wolfhound some 500 years ago. This breed of terrier was first used by farmers as a deratter.
But its outgoing personality and loyalty soon made it a household favorite. The dog is usually found with a deep red-brown coat. Our dog however has a rich black coat with a white chest spot.
This is most unusual, occuring in less than 1% of the breed. Recently her facial hair has begun to take on a RED tint.
In Feb 2005 she was diagnosed with diabetes TypeI. Her symptoms included frequent urination, at all times of the day and night. Her blood sugar tested over 400+ on the human blood glucometer scale. She was placed on 9 units of Humalin N insulin given every 12 hrs(5->6AM and 5->6PM). Her diet was adjusted to eliminate excess carbohydrates, in 1 week she was stabilized, but since then her insulin requirement has grown to 14 units twice a day. Her diet includes green vegetables and meat, fish or eggs. Very little grains which her body converts to sugar. She has lost 5 lbs, But NO cataracts at this writing(8/05). Cateracts began to appear in August 2006. She still has some sight vision and does not bump into objects. Her insulin level is now (1/07) 18 units twice a day. Her back legs are sluggish and she gets 2 baby aspirins once a day. About ~165mg/day. This seems to help her mobility. She is as of this update 12++ years old (13 on the 19th of Oct.2007), and doing the best she can.

Caseydoodle Characteristics:
Likes her belly rubbed a certain way by her favorite person. Casey weighs about 50 pounds(10+ years old) currently. Casey still likes to eat steak, chicken and fish in that order. She will settle for Wendy's and she draws the line at McDonalds.
Since she developed diabetes, i order a Wendy's double with lettuce tomato and cheese -hold the bun. she seems to enjoy this very much. Cynthia also cooks boiled chicken, fish, and eggs, some of which we package and freeze. We microwave chicken and mix hamburger with vegtables to provide a more balanced diet. She will not touch the canned 'Science' diet the vetenerian suggested. We do not do home glucometer testing for blood sugar levels. Giving insulin injections is difficult enough since the needle hurts and she does not understand why we would hurt her. After the shot she always lets us know it's OK with a lick. We use urine dip sticks twice a day and keep a log to give an indication of blood sugar levels.
