164LX Mother Board

The versions of XFree86 presented below have been hacked from cvs xsrc generally obtained from xfree86.org. The XFree86 code is basically designed around the i386 pci bus structure, as such alpha arch is generally very different. The AS1200/AS4000/4001/DS10/20 ..dual or quad proccessor boxes have more complex PCI bus structures. Probe of vga card by 'scanpci' calls generally will fail. I recently started work on the AS1200 this is very early shot of dsektop, much work is still required. Building Xserver from code on this page or from current XFree86 xsrc will generally crash and burn on the AS1200. The resultant Xservers(built from code here->) will only work on 'pc' like Alphas. Pci vga card probing on 21264 boxes will generally fail, if succesful the card memory mapping may 'hang' the box on start up of xfree86 server. This xsrc will work on PWS433/500/600, 164LX, AS800/1000 and AS200/500/600 machines. Those who feel they would like a better overview should read the numerous user/developer comments on the port-alpha list.

AS500

PWS 433/500/600 Mother Board

Notes on use of the ATI_Radeon 7000/7500 pws.pdf The PWS has been heavily tested along with the 164LX and AS800 Alphas. XFree86 drivers are just user-mode shared object files loaded by the XFree86 executable.
They use a custom API and call a bunch of user-mode functions. xsrc compiles with gcc2.95 or gcc3.3.2
Why bother with 'obsolete hardware' now that HP is commited to stopping alpha cpu work? -Well the original DEC boxes(1995->1998) where built well, they already have out lasted the PI and PII and PIII boxes, and its fun! This software is free and no claim is made to its viability-'use at your own risk'.
